How to Safely Pressure Wash a Deck: A Quick Guide
Pressure washing is one of the most effective ways to revive an old dirty deck, and is essential before staining or sealing. However, pressure washing can also be dangerous if you are not handling the pressure washer properly. To avoid chancing it yourself you should consider calling Wash Doctors Pressure Washing, but if you're a DIY type of person here's a quick guide to do it yourself.

1. Choose the Right Equipment
Most hardware store electric pressure washers come with a PSI of between 1200 and 2500, anything in this range is powerful enough if used correctly. Use a 40 degree nozzle to provide a wide spray and hold the nozzle around 12 inches away from the surface you are cleaning. It's always a good idea to start with a test area to ensure you are using the right pressure at the right distance to not damage the surface.

2. Prep Your Deck
Before firing up the machine you should remove anything that you don't want getting dirty or broken. As soon as you start pressure washing dirt is going to be flying many meters away from where you are cleaning so move any patio furniture, planters, breakable items well out of the way. Also, if you are using a chemical solution make sure it's safe and intended to be used on the surface you are using it on (less is more when trying out new solutions).

3. Wear Eye Protection, Hearing Protection, and Steel Toe Boots
The pressure generated from a pressure washer is enough to launch almost anything like its a mini missile projectile. Wear eye protection to ensure you don't damage your vision. It's also important to wear hearing protection if using a gas pressure washer as they get quite loud, most hardware store electric machines aren't very loud but use your discretion. Lastly, steel toe boots are a must for beginners. Accidentally crossing your toes with the high pressure stream can be extremely painful and may cause a nasty cut. Be safe!

4. Wash In Smooth Even Passes
-
Work with the grain of the wood (follow the long edges of the boards)
-
Keep the spray wand moving to avoid too much pressure in one spot which might etch or splinter the wood
-
For stubborn spots move on and treat it with a chemical solution after you've finished the rest of the deck

Pressure washing your deck can yield very impressive results if done correctly. By using the right equipment, technique, and safety precautions you can restore your deck bringing it back to life!

If you still feel intimidated or don't want to take the risk of damaging your deck or having an accident give us a call and we'd be happy to help!
